Chapter 15

“Ric is not a good guy. He might be good at what he does, but he’s not pleasant.” Her eyes flashed with anger as she looked at Jaecar. Eli watched and waited for him to snarl at her. Maybe show claws or fangs—he didn’t.

“He’s gotten better.”

Elora frowned. “Maybe.”

Emotions rolled over Eli, a mix of excitement, annoyance, and worry. Why did everyone have to be annoyed? Annoyed shifters were a second away from being homicidal monsters, and Eli wanted nothing of it.

A man came jogging up the stairs, and Eli pressed closer to the wall—he was surrounded, trapped. The emotions coming off the man were warm and joyous though, which had Eli confused. How could anyone be happy here?

“Hi!” The man grinned at them, his eyes sparkling.

“Thad!” Elora smiled. “How are you?” She was happy too. Eli was stunned. Elora was happy. She was never happy—always worried…about him. Maybe she was happy when he wasn’t around.
