Chapter 19

“Can you point them out if you see them again?”

Eli frowned. The one in the car, absolutely, the one who’d given him the sandwich…He tried to recall, but all he remembered was that the man was huge, as most shifters were. “Just one, the one in the car.”

Jaecar studied him, his face blank. “Do you know where they are from? Do they belong to a pack?”

Eli shook his head. He’d paid no attention to packs or pack politics. Varg was always angry when he came home from pack meetings, and he took it out on Eli.

“What are you thinking?”

Eli jumped. “What?”

Jaecar’s face was still blank, but he could’ve sworn the eyes were more yellow. Eli’s pulse increased. Fuck, had he pissed Jaecar off? He pulled the knees closer to his chest.

“I can smell fear, Elijah. What are you thinking?”

Eli scanned for Jaecar’s emotional state, but he couldn’t read him. Varg had always been triggered by Eli’s fear, had always leered and made it worse. “Nothing.”
