Eli rubbed his chest and frowned at him. “For a guy who looks as emotionless as you do, there’s a lot going on.”

“The outside doesn’t match the inside?” Kol hadn’t much thought about how he was. He was dominant, but in most cases he didn’t need to prove it. He joked and laughed with the guys at the station, flirted with Thaddeus to rile Sandy up, but most often he kept an impassive face while among people.

“No, but that’s good.”

“It’s good?”

Eli gave him the smallest smile. “You look scary.”

Kol huffed. “I am scary, but younever have to fear me.”

The smile disappeared, and Kol wanted to demand it back. “My land starts here.” He slowed the car and drove up close to the mailbox so he could peek inside—no mail. Getting the car moving again, he turned in on his road, a narrow gravel road going straight through the woods. 11
