Chapter 45

“Don’t worry, I won’t let anyone get to you.”

“I’m not worried.” Eli shook his head and took a deep breath.

Jaecar raised an eyebrow. “I have a nose, dear. It might not be quite as fine-tuned as your empath skills, but I know fear when I scent it.”

Right, no bullshitting a shifter. “I’m not worrying, but I had forgotten that part of it all.” The tiredness was gone, and he had a hard time sitting still.

With a nod, Jaecar exited the car. Eli watched him walk across the lawn, scanning the forest. When he disappeared around the house, Eli held his breath and looked for movement. All he saw was a bird jumping from one branch to another in a birch tree.

When his car door opened, he yelped. There had been no time between Jaecar’s emotions reaching him and the door opening. It was scary how fast he could move.

Jaecar grinned at him. “You can come out now. I couldn’t scent anyone having been close to the house.”
