Chapter 22

“I’ve never been afraid of snakes, or spiders, or enclosed spaces. But when I was a kid, I used to have this dream…well, never mind. It’s stupid.”

“I’m freaking out because I’m on a luxury yacht anchored a mile off a tropical island. I don’t think that you could possibly seem more stupid than I feel right now.”

“Well…I used to have this dream that I woke up alone. I mean, the entire house would be completely quiet. And in my dream, I was always so sure that everybody was just downstairs, but I couldn’t hear them for some reason. So I’d get out of bed and go to the end of the hall and call for my mom, but she wouldn’t answer me. I’d go down the stairs, still calling for her, but she wouldn’t answer. No matter how loud I shouted. I’d check the kitchen first because it was morning, and my dream always felt so real. I mean, I never realized I was dreaming. Does that make sense?”
