Chapter 32

Alec sighed. “This was easier when I didn’t know you.”

“What do you mean?”

“This. What we’re doing. Everything. I thought we could just pick up where we left off but…I think we might have missed our window.”

It was nothing except what Nick had expected to hear, but it still left a small twinge. “We were on a tropical paradise, surrounded by the best of everything, and a thousand miles from our responsibilities. It’s no real surprise that things are different now.”

“Yeah, that makes sense. Maybe whatever we had…belongs there. But it was good seeing you again. You’re…different.”

“I was somebody else at the resort.” The corner of his mouth lifted. “You probably liked him better.”

“I don’t know. I was probably somebody else, too. I’m not exactly proud of most of my behavior.”

“Don’t worry about it. I was with you every step of the way.”

“I should probably get going. I like to be there when Drew gets home. Otherwise, I don’t really get a chance to see him.”
