He rolled his shoulders, cracked his neck, and greeted the woman behind the counter as he held up his membership card. He had no idea what her name was, but she worked most nights of the week, and they’d stopped the formal check of his card a long time ago. 10

Nix yawned as he and Logan stepped out of the truck and went into the library. It hadn’t opened yet, but they’d been given a code so they could get in through the door. Their footsteps echoed in the eerie silence, and the strip lights hummed to life in the dark February morning.

“Shit, this is creepy.” He grimaced at Logan.

“What is?”

“An empty library.”

Logan frowned at him and looked around. “You think?”

“Hell, yeah. I expect some books to scream at us like in the Harry Potter movie.”

Logan chuckled. “I don’t know what’s more disturbing, you having seen the Harry Potter movies or you picturing screaming books.”

“We have no restricted section in this library.” Jules came walking from behind the counter.
