Chapter 40

“What was that?” Jules stared. “The noise? Did he purr?”

“I think so.”

“No! Booksy doesn’t purr. Ever.”

“Maybe it was a cough.”

Jules glared at Booksy. “No, it wasn’t. I heard him.”

Nix stood and wrapped an arm over Jules’ shoulders, nuzzling his jaw. “We can pretend it was a sneeze if it makes you feel better.”

Jules melted against him. “No, I have to come to terms with my cat being a traitor.”

* * * *

Jules couldn’t believe it. Booksy had purred, albeit only on one breath, but it had been a purr.

Booksy didn’t purr. Ever.

He breathed in deep, loving the way Nix smelled. “Want to have a look around? It’s only two rooms, but it’s enough for Booksy and me.”

“Sure.”

Jules led him into the living room. “This is it.” It wasn’t big, the light yellow walls had seen better days, as had the sofa. He’d bought it in a thrift shop when he’d left Derek. Everything he owned, apart from the bed, he’d bought in a thrift shop. “It’s not much.”
