“I’m very sorry for your loss, Mr Laytham.” Miss Coulbourne approached, her hand extended.

“Thank you.”

“You’re quite alone? I don’t see Lady Laytham.”

“Aunt Cecily is quite prostrate.” I’d said that repeatedly. I saw no need to tell them she was prostrate with relief, and not grief. That was no one’s business but the family’s. “Arabella is at her side constantly.”

“How fortunate for her ladyship to have such a devoted niece.”

“Yes.”

Miss Coulbourne gazed around the church’s courtyard. “Is Mr Scarlett also prostrate?”

“I beg your pardon?”

“I apologise. However, I must admit to being rather disturbed he didn’t send me a message. Surely, as his affianced bride, I could have been of some help?”
