Chapter 72

“You comin’ to bed?” Violet asked. There was a sizable gap to Rory’s right. Violet had assumed it would be Mei’s place.

“In a bit.” Mei’s eyes didn’t leave the silver horizon. The moon, competing against the orange glow of the oil lamps inside, reflected against the glass in sharp razor edges and onto Mei’s profile like stitching.

“Somethin’ on your mind?”

“No.”

Violet propped herself on her elbow. “Somethin’s got you worried though. That’s for sure.”

“Every town’s a gamble for us,” Linus elaborated. “Even in places where we have friendsEspeciallyplaces where we have friends.”

“Still, you can’t expect to live off no sleep.”

“I’ll go to bed when I feel like it’s safe enough.” Mei turned to Violet. “You should get some shut eye though. Busy day tomorrow.”
