“Think we’ll see him again?”

The question hung in the air. No one dared answer it. “Yes,” felt like a lie, and “no,” felt too cruel to say aloud. Linus lifted his head from the fire, the orange glow flickering on his glasses. “Grammy ain’t around no more. Don’t make sense to visit for Christmas.”

“Of course we visit for Christmas,” Mei snapped. She hunched tighter into her cowskin jacket, glaring at the fire pit. “All we gotta do is get rid of Abernathy. Once he’s out of the picture, we go back for him.”

“And then what?” Violet asked. Mei didn’t answer. “That’s what it all comes down to, don’t it? Killin’ him.”

“It’s what it’s always come down to,” Mei responded. “Every job we ever took we took cause it brings us closer his way. Some less so than others, but inches become miles, if you got enough of ‘em.”
