As they waited, the Railwalkers sat themselves on a few overturned barrels. Their horses had joined the stable of other animals: goats, pigs, chickens, mules, and only one or two other mounts worth their salt. Linus broke out some old hard tack for them to share. As Violet nibbled, she kept glancing over to the Chinese families.
“Was that what it was like for your family, Mei?” she finally asked. Mei looked up from her canteen, following Violet’s gaze. “Did your parents come over like this? All grouped up and waiting for a boat?”
Mei chuckled. “I’m sure,” she said. “They never talked much about their past. Their only focus was what the future had in store for us. For me.”
