“What’d you tell ‘em?!”

“They asked who I was,” said Mei. “Where I was from. Told ‘em I’m American, and I don’t think they believe it.”

“Meigeuó rén!” the children chanted. “Meigeuó rén! Meigeuó rén!” The smaller of the three, whose head was nearly shaved other than the ponytail beneath their hat, took Mei’s hand with glee.

“Wǒ dū xiǎng zuò měiguó lǎo!”

Mei chuckled, and Violet, like a cat with a mouse, clung to her shoulder. “What?” Violet demanded.

“He said he wants to be American, too.” Mei turned to Violet with a big smile. “I bet they think you gotta be special for it.” Mei caught sight of something just beyond Violet’s shoulders, and Violet turned to look. “Looks like we’re here.” Eyes fixated before her, Violet stood to get a better look of the horizon.
