But instead, I scratch Princess behind the ears and mumble a quiet “goodbye” before David picks her up and sets her in her crate.

“I’m sorry I’ve been talking your ears off,” he says when she’s resting happily.

“I don’t mind.”

“You’re the only one. Even Mrs. Roslund seems to think I talk too much, and that’s something coming from her.”

“You’re the only one not complaining I don’t talk enough.”

David chuckles. “We’re a perfect match, then.” His cheeks pinken. “I…eh…didn’t mean to imply…”

“It’s fine.” I smile, hoping he’ll see I understood what he meant. “It was nice seeing you again. But I better head home.” I point my thumb in the direction of my car.

“Oh! Yeah. Unless…”

When nothing else is forthcoming, I ask, “Unless what?”

“No, I just had a stupid idea.” He averts his gaze and shifts his weight from one foot to the other.

“Tell me anyway.”

“I was…uh…going to ask if you’ve got any plans.”
