Chapter 6

“‘S all right.” I scoop her up and set her on my lap. She promptly lies down, crosses her paws, and rests her little head on them. She pushes her snout into my hands and closes her eyes. I scratch behind her ears, making her body shudder with a sigh.

“I’m afraid you’ve done it now,” David says with a chuckle. “You’ve given Her Highness a throne. She’ll never want to leave.”

“I don’t mind.”

“May I take a picture? I’d like to show it to Mrs. Roslund. Show off Princess’s new friend.”

“Sure.”

Princess shifts, but when I look down, her eyes are still closed. I carefully stroke her back with my fingers, enjoying the sensation of a warm body on my lap.

“You’re too adorable, I can’t take it,” David says. He turns the phone to me and shows me the picture. Princess looks relaxed and I have a small smile playing in the corners of my mouth when I glance down at her. I look content. Relaxed.

“Nah. I’m just a tired old bricklayer. Princess is the adorable one.”
