Chapter 14

I crane my neck and squint, watching his distorted form through the rain-drenched window. When he’s safely inside, he gives me two thumbs up and a wide smile. I nod in reply.

After backing out of the parking lot, we creep along the streets. The drive to his building takes forever, but when we finally arrive, I stop by the curb as he parks and runs inside. I wait a few moments longer, making absolutely sure he gets home safely.

David: I’m safe and sound in my apartment. Go home and take care of yourself. And please text me when you get home so I know you’re safe, too.

I glare at the phone. I’m not someone who texts. Calling is easier and quicker and is my preferred method of communication. But for David, I’ll make an exception.
