Chapter 13

He smiles. “Hi.” Gone are the worried frowns on his face and his defeated shoulders.

“You look like a new man.”

He nods. “Dry clothes work wonders for the mood.”

I chuckle. “I can imagine.”

He twists on the seat until he’s facing me. “First of all, Mrs. Roslund sends her sincerest thanks.” He holds out the box wrapped in a plastic bag. “It’s her homemade snickerdoodles. They are the best you’ll ever taste, trust me. She also says to tell you that you’re a real hero and she would like to thank you in person sometime when you’re not busy. She more or less ordered me to bring you around.”

“Yeah?”

“Yes. And it’s best for everyone if you don’t fight her on this.”

“I would never.” I lay my hand over my heart and grin.

He returns my smile. “Good. Secondly. Thank you. I was one second away from throwing myself on the ground in a screaming fit like a toddler when you showed up. I couldn’t have made it back without you.”

“You woulda managed.”
