Chapter 12

“Come. Let’s hurry.” I wrap my fingers around his ice-cold, shivering hand, and set off toward the parking lot, rushing as fast as we can, never letting go of each other.

When we reach my truck, I throw open the passenger door so he can climb inside, then hurry around to the driver’s side and shut the door behind howling winds and whipping rain. I turn on the engine and blast the heat as I disentangle poor Princess from my jacket and hand her to David

“Take off as many wet clothes as you can,” I say and twist around until I can reach the towel and blanket I always keep in the back seat. I hand both of them to David. “Here. Dry off. Get warm.” I shrug off my anorak and wipe my hands on my damp jeans. “Are you okay?”

David nods as he rubs Princess with the towel.

“Give her to me. You need warming up, too.”
