Chapter 12

“Hey…” A hand rested on Jesse’s thigh. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean…I know we haven’t talked about it. But I gotta be honest, I wasn’t expecting this reaction, either.”

The stromboli’s grin stretched across the curve of its crust, under wide eyes with shocked eyebrows.

“Are you gonna say something? Or it’s…you don’t wantthis, is that it? Is there someone else, or—”

Jesse let out a heavy sigh as he tossed the menus on the coffee table. He turned to face Jack and shoot him an incredulous look. “How could there be anyone else? We literally spend every moment together!”

“Exactly!” Jack sounded exasperated, though Jesse could tell he was trying to keep his voice patient. “So, what’s the issue?”

“There doesn’t have to be an issuefor me to be uncomfortable with the label,” Jesse evaded, but Jack’s eyes narrowed.

“There is one, though.” His voice lowered, twinged with hurt. “I’m not the only one who’s got a readable face.”
