Chapter 13

Jack looked up at the ceiling and let out a humorless chuckle. “Wow, you really…okay, hold on.” He tilted his head down to meet Jesse’s gaze, his eyes damp at the corners. “Can we please just talk about this? I know things got heated, and I’m sor—”

“No!” Jesse leaped from the couch before Jack could get the dreaded words out. He strode over to the front door and yanked it open, nodding pointedly to Jack, then through the doorway. “You need to leave. Now.”

He braced himself for protests. Instead, Jack got to his feet and dutifully walked to the door. Resting one hand on the door jamb, he looked over his shoulder. Tears had worked their way to the line of his lashes, though they still refused to fall.

“We were friends first. That’s what I liked best about falling for you. I thought we had something special. Hell, I still do. But if you disagree, then I guess I was wrong. And that’s fine. I still wish you the best, Jesse. You deserve it.”
