Chapter 5

“So it would seem. It was between my friend and one Nathaniel Herriot. It didn’t take me long to discover Herriot, per se, didn’t exist. However, fingerprints found on the receipt belonged to Nate Hanks.”

“He was arrested at some point?”

“No,” Rory replied. “You should know, being a cop, that to get a driver’s license, many states require a thumbprint.”

“True. That’s how you linked Herriot to Hanks. Then what? You had proof he sold the Bramer to the collector. Why not turn the evidence over to the police?”

“I wanted to deal with Hanks myself. I didn’t like the idea he’d managed to con my friend, who, as I said, was elderly and not in the best of health when he bought the Bramer forgery.”

“So you’ve been tracking Hanks ever since. Obviously, you haven’t caught him trying to pass off another forgery to a greedy collector.”
