Late that afternoon, the building was Lou’s—or technically, Esteban Valencia’s—with a two-year lease. Mrs. King ran information Lou gave her, checked his credit rating, and found nothing amiss.

“Gotta love it when things start falling into place,” Lou commented, when he and Rory returned to the car.

“They wouldn’t have without Gideon,” Rory pointed out acerbically.

“True. It takes all of us. I’m well aware of that. Let’s go back to the building and start making notes on exactly what needs to be done.” Lou was damned if he was going to let Rory get to him again. We’re going to be working together. If I get pissed every time he tries to put me down, it’ll blow the whole operation.
