Carter hailed a cab, and they were at the hotel in about ten minutes. It seemed to be a pretty high-end place, the first clue being the opera music that wafted gently from the speakers above the entryway. They took the elevator to the room on an upper floor. Tossing his jacket on a chair and kicking off his shoes, Carter said, “Make yourself comfortable. There’s a menu for room service on the desk by the phone. I’m just going to step in here for a moment.” And he went into the bathroom, closing the door but leaving it ajar.

When he came out a few moments later, he was wearing only the white robe the hotel had left for guests. And he was carrying another. “Here,” he said, “Get comfortable. Put this on.”
