Chapter 10

“Really? Where are they buried? What town?”

Dominic really didn’t want to share much more. “On the north side of the city, in a small town along the Appian Way.”

“Great! I can show you the catacombs on the way back. They’re fascinating…”

Now it was Dominic’s turn to put his hand on Carter’s. “Carter,” he said, looking the man straight in the eyes. “I want to do this alone. I had always planned on doing this alone. It is the main reason I came here.”

“Maybe if I met you afterward…” Dominic shook his head.

“Okay, but will you have dinner with me tomorrow night?”

“We’ll see. That might be nice.”

“Good. Come here to my hotel when you get back.”

They sat quietly, an awkward silence descending between them. Dominic sipped his wine, thinking he probably should go, as he had to get up the next morning to catch the bus that went out to the Appian Way. Carter finally interrupted the silence.
