Chapter 22

“How far past the square is your place?” asked Sandro.

“It was two more stops on the vaporetto,” Dominic answered.

“Okay, let’s head over past the Doge’s Palace and see how far we get before we have to wade in the water again.”

They walked on the high risers for about twenty minutes, then had to resume wading for the last ten. The building housing Dominic’s apartment was flooded with about a foot of water. The owner was in the hallway, desperately trying to move some things to the second floor. Dominic and Sandro offered to help.

“Will you be checking out?” the man asked as they finished carrying the last items up the stairs.”

“Yes, I guess I’d better, from what I’m hearing,” said Dominic.

“Okay, I’ll give you a credit on your bill.”

Dominic held up his hand. “You keep it. You’re going to have a lot of damage to take care of. Consider that my donation.”

“Grazzi,” said the man. “I hope your next trip to Venice is a more pleasant one.”
