Chapter 23

On the other side of the canal, a small boy was riding his tricycle on a sagging balcony, a bundle of energy moving in tight circles.

“Massimo, time to come in, time to eat!” his mother called from inside the house.

“Just one more minute, Mama!” the boy shouted, obviously not wanting to end his ride just yet.

“Massimo, now!” his mother shouted, but her words were immediately drowned out by the sound of rotten wood cracking in two, as the balcony collapsed into the murky waters of the canal, taking the boy and his tricycle along with it.

In a split-second Sandro kicked off his boots and dove head-first into the canal. The image of the frozen pond in Michigan flashed in Dominic’s mind. It was just a nanosecond, there and gone, and then he kicked off his waders and followed Sandro into the canal.
