Chapter 25

“You speak such good Italian,” observed Maria. “That is unusual for an American, isn’t it?”

“Yes. My parents and grandparents spoke it.”

“And how do you know each other?”

Sandro looked at Dominic. “He was lost the other night trying to get back to his place, as St. Mark’s Square was flooded.”

“So I guess you could say he rescued me,” laughed Dominic. “That’s two rescues for you in two days, isn’t it, Sandro?”

“You mean you never knew each other before two days ago?” asked Maria. They shook their heads.

“It is incredible that you worked so well together in the canal, knowing exactly what to do, as if you had been friends for years.”

The two men smiled at each other. “I guess it is,” said Sandro. “We have noticed we almost seem to know each other’s thoughts.”
