“It’s complicated,” I said.
“I’m listening.” Stefan chugged the rest of his wine before grabbing the bottle and pouring himself a refill.
“I had to lie to a friend because of another friend.”
“Sounds exhausting.”
“You have no idea.” I brought the glass up to my lips and swirled the contents while the sweet and bitter flavors wafted against my nose. I soon followed Stefan’s example and finished my beverage.
Stefan sighed. “Lying is complicated.”
“There’s only one problem.”
He frowned. “And what’s that?”
“Lying for the friend wasn’t a one-time thing. This lie is going to make it necessary to continue my dishonesty.”
His gaze shifted to my empty glass. “You need a refill.”
Stefan grabbed the bottle and poured me a more-than-generous serving.
“Thanks,” I said.
“Do you regret lying?” Stefan asked.
