Chapter 16

Katherine pushed a lock of her hair out of the way. “I thought Taylor and I were soulmates.”

“I know. I know.”

Wow. Katherine was reduced to begging for a place to live like a needy relative. Just because she had a bed, a closet full of her clothes, which I had picked up (because having her clothes missing from her home closet supported her runaway story), a desk, and a bookcase full of books didn’t mean this was ideal for her.

Katherine couldn’t even open the curtains, which made the situation more depressing. Going to the bathroom and taking a shower was the only time she was able to leave the bedroom. Although she hadn’t disagreed, which was great. Her safety and that of my family was at stake if she ever got caught. So, it wasn’t as if she argued with my parents over the rule.

“I hope this isn’t forever,” Katherine said.

“Me, too.”

She grinned. “Thank you for doing this for me. I’ll never forget it.”
