Chapter 20

Repeated dripping sounds echoed, diverting my attention.

Figures. I should’ve realized Mom was making coffee.

“I don’t understand where this is coming from,” I said after Mom frowned at me for getting distracted.

“I’m not trying to nag, but we should make Katherine feel extra welcome.”

“Katherine’s birthday is tomorrow night,” I said.

“Perfect. You could spend time with her then.”

“We can all spend time with her.”

“I’m afraid your father and I are going out to the theater tomorrow night. It’s our first date night in ages.” Mom put on oven mittens and took the brownies out of the oven after it chimed. She put the tray down on the stove’s center before turning the oven off.

I rolled my eyes. “And I’m the one who needs to make more time for Katherine?”
