Katherine sighed. “I don’t mean to keep dwelling on it, but thank you again for the other day. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

“Don’t worry about it.” I continued glancing at my pushed-back, middle-parted hair in the mirror that hung on the basement wall.

“I hope it won’t happen again.”

“I’m sure it won’t,” I said.

Yup. I had no problem humoring Katherine despite not having psychic abilities and predicting the future. A white lie was sometimes the kindest thing to do when honesty caused someone to worry.

She placed her hands in her pockets. “I hope nobody tipped them off.”

“I’m sure it was only routine.”

“Yeah. But we still can’t be too careful.”
