Chapter 23

One of the swans pecked at the other one, knocking it on the ground. The swan lowered its neck on the ground and devoured an insect. Then, the swan on the ground regained its posture. Although thinking about something that happened outdoors and was aggressive wasn’t helpful when it came to forgetting about Grandma’s demise. In fact, the opposite was true.

Grandma and I went camping a couple of years ago in the south during the height of the Goblin War. The idea started innocently enough because my parents had promised to take me camping for the longest time despite their hectic schedule. But they were still too busy, and Dad didn’t want Mom to take me alone. And after pleading and pleading with them and Grandma, Grandma took me. Although we should’ve picked a better spot to go camping because we were near goblin territory.

But I hadn’t known the shuffling of footsteps after morning sunlight snuck through the tent meant death.
