He tilted his head. “How do you think it went?”

“I don’t know. It’s hard to tell. She seemed polite.”

“That was my opinion, too. Although it’s hard to tell if she was faking it.”

My scarf bobbed after a gust of wind rolled through the air. “Do you think she’s playing a game?”

“We need to find out the rules if she is. But it goes back to your point. It’s my turn to use her now,” Stefan said.

Thinking about the ramifications of what Stefan said was intense, but there was no way around it. And revenge had nothing to do with my reasoning. If Stefan benefited from Queen Vivian, then great. Katherine still resided in my basement, and I needed to know if things would get even bloodier for nonmagical people.

I sucked in a breath. “Your sister wouldn’t be doing these awful things if she was a good person.”

“You’re right, which is why we have to be careful.”
