“I know. But at least one of us has the guts to try to thwart Queen Vivian’s regime.”
“Do you think life will ever get back to normal?”
She let out a faint snort. “I don’t think you’ll enjoy my answer.”
“You’re probably right.”
“Are you worried Taylor will out Katherine’s secret?” she asked.
Please. As if I didn’t worry enough about keeping Katherine safe. Besides, there was nothing wrong with trusting Taylor, until he gave me a reason not to.
Raquel took her hair tie out, making her hair fall below her shoulders. “I sometimes wonder how life got so complicated.”
“Me, too.”
“One thing at a time, though. I want this afternoon to go well,” she said.

Raquel and I sat on the living room couch across from her parents—Mr. and Mrs. Buckley—hours later. A plate of cookies even rested on the middle of the mahogany living room table. We all had a teacup in front of us.
“What did you want to talk to us about, Raquel?” Mrs. Buckley grabbed a cookie and started eating it.
