Chapter 39

Raquel sighed quietly. “If only I knew what gender Anastasia fancied.”

“I could find out for you,” I said.

Stefan and I stood by his pond later in the evening while the moon glowed above a nearby tree.

“I hope you aren’t mad at me,” I said, running my hand through my hair, trying to smooth it where the wind had made it stand up.

He frowned. “Why would you think that?”

“Because of me convincing you to let your sister back into your life.”

“We’ve already discussed that.”

Sweat gathered on my upper lip. “But I haven’t been one hundred percent honest with you.”

“I don’t understand.” Stefan turned, giving me his full attention.

Something howled. We both turned toward the sound. Standing at the end of the street was a secret police wolf and officer. They had just gotten out of a police vehicle. The wolf took off at a run with the officer following him, and they were soon out of sight.

I turned back to Stefan as a shudder ran down my spine. “Can you keep a secret?”
