I winked. “Oh, and one more thing.”

“And what would that be?”

I snuggled up close to him and said quietly in his ear. “I’ll sleep with you after the ball if you stop wearing that ridiculous half mask. At least here at home.”

“We’ll see.” Stefan took a big swig of his tea.

“Please let me attend the masked ball,” Katherine said hours later while we were in the basement as the time inched closer to bedtime.

It was only natural for her to get restless. I needed to consider how I’d feel if I were in her position. I would’ve been fuming with rage if my life were reduced to hiding in a basement. Palpations wracked my chest at the thought of Katherine going to the masked ball. I didn’t want Katherine or my parents or me to die because she needed a temporary thrill.

I scowled at her. “That’s a terrible idea. Sirch and Queen Vivian will be there.”

“And Princess Anastasia. It might be fun to help Raquel,” Katherine added.
