Chapter 60

“We found evidence. A big stack of clothes and a bed in the basement. Not to mention a fourth cup,” said one of the wolves before growling.

I bit my lip a little too hard, and an iron-bitter taste spread through my mouth. Although I couldn’t help myself when my worst nightmare was possibly unfolding. “I’m sorry, but I had to tell them how you were sleeping in the basement, and how you and Dad are going through a rough patch, Mom.”

“Then why does it look like they just got back from a night out?” asked the second secret police wolf.

“It’s our job,” replied the wolf.

Mom mouthed, “I’m sorry” at me before sucking in a deep breath.

“Don’t lie for us out of loyalty, Maximillian. It’s true. We’ve been keeping Katherine in the basement and are prepared to expect our punishment,” Mom said.
