Chapter 68

Hank waved his hand over the lock. It clicked, and I recoiled when the door flung open.

“Let’s hurry,” Hilda said, dragging me by the hand.

Thump. Thump. Thump. My heart sped up; it was time to execute our mission, whether I was ready or not. I could at least take some comfort with how I was working for the greater good. I would have liked to think Katherine’s parents, my parents, and Katherine would’ve been proud of me if they knew what I was doing. I was choosing to do something, despite the risk to my life.

We walked a hundred feet before Hank flicked his hand and the building door opened.

“What room are we looking for?” I asked after stepping into the building.

“It’ll say gymnasium,” Hank replied as I scurried after him and Hilda.

“This used to be a school?” I asked.

Hilda nodded at me. “Yes.”

He rounded the corner in the hallway; a chill clung to the air, making me shiver. We passed a dozen more rooms before coming to a gray door with the word GYMNASIUM on it.
