Chapter 17

Jack insisted on helping the other engineers, despite his broken arm and concussion. Cillian told him to rest, but he didn’t listen. He dove headfirst into the problem, and didn’t return until late at night each day.

Cillian split his time between Henri and the medical center. Since Zoe was busy treating patients, he took control of the dead, organizing the funerals and helping the families. In doing so, he met up with Father Whalen once more. The priest insisted on performing last rites and speaking on the deceased’s behalf. Cillian thought it was a little weird, but the families seemed to appreciate it, even when their loved ones were not Catholic or even Christian.

After the funerals, Whalen cornered Cillian. “I didn’t get a chance to tell you. You have a lovely family.”

He raised an eyebrow. “I would think you wouldn’t approve, Father.”
