Chapter 49

Cillian found himself mesmerized by the apparent changes in his former friend and mentor. The man that sat before him, munching on salad, was unrecognizable. And what’s more, he seemed like the kind of person Cillian could easily get along with, if they didn’t have the awful history. Of course, he had no intention of approaching Whalen, as it might encourage another attempt at courting him. Jack would never approve, especially considering the priest’s brief but frightening interaction with Henri.

But he could watch from afar. He did, for nearly half an hour, as the members of the group sat completely unaware of his presence.

Eventually, the people finished their meal and rose to their feet. They said their goodbyes, split up, and went their separate ways. Whalen stood by himself for a few moments. He seemed to take in his surroundings, breathing deeply. After a couple minutes, he too left the growing floor, and Cillian was alone.
