But it wasn’t. In fact, Muhaimin had only one thing to say. Another warning against Whalen. Cillian sighed. “I already know not to trust him. What more do you want from me?”

“Kill him.”

He nearly spit out his sandwich. After a few moments to recover, “What?”

“Leave it to Jack if you’re scared, but it must be done. Kill him or have him killed; it makes no difference.”

He’d much rather see Whalen be convicted of his crimes and locked away, despite what his hallucinations seemed to want. “I can’t kill him,” he told Muhaimin. “And I would never make Jack do something like that.”

“You must do it.”

“No. I can’t. He may still be a threat. He may even be dangerous. But he hasn’t gone near me or my family since he quit the priesthood. As far as I can tell, he has no interest in me any longer. I would defend Jack and Henri if I had to, but I don’t think that’s even remotely necessary.”
