Schiffer took a seat in a chair, interlaced his fingers, and set his hands on the edge of the bed. Cillian absently noted a wedding ring. “Want to tell me how you managed to kill that thing?”

“Not really.”

“You don’t have a choice here. I can and will detain you, along with that partner of yours. Then what would your little girl do?”

He clenched his fist. Anger made him arrogant. “Don’t threaten my family.”

“Tell me what I need to know.”

Cillian sighed. “On Iotan, I was attacked by a creature that looked like a plant. It melted through my helmet, filled my lungs with spores, and ruined my eye.” He motioned toward the clear damage inflicted. “Shortly after, I started having hallucinations.”

“Go on.”
