Chapter 84

He ran up to Zoe. Cillian grabbed her by the shoulders and started pulling her back to the car. She didn’t object, though it took some effort to move her. Zoe didn’t seem to notice he was even there. Pushing her, he eventually got Zoe back inside. Jack started the SUV and the group made a U-turn, driving across the grassy median to the other part of the highway. Cillian wasn’t excited to go back into the city, but at least they would be safer.

That was the plan. They made it only a quarter of a mile before finding another mass of vehicles recently smashed together. There were about twenty this time and the crash must have happened only minutes ago, but it was enough to completely block the road. “Drive on the median!” Cillian instructed.

Jack took his advice.

But as they passed the wreck, their car got hung up on some underbrush and small trees. Jack revved the engine and spun the wheels but could not free the SUV. He cursed under his breath.
