Chapter 89

They found an abandoned house with Monk-sized doors that were wide open. Though Rapunzel was reluctant to leave the motorcycle outside, it gave in to exhaustion. They filed into the house and closed the door behind them. The main latch had been broken, but the deadbolt still worked. Not that it could stop Whalen. They might be safer from thieves, however.

The two of them took up residence in a living room on the first floor. They didn’t dare turn on any lights for fear of being seen. But there was a soft couch for Cillian to lay on and a large floor pillow for Rapunzel. The Monk fell asleep almost instantaneously. Cillian guessed that perhaps it had been awake for as long as it took to find him and return to Chicago. He had a hard time sleeping in a strange place. When he finally did, he slipped into a troubled slumber filled with nightmares of facing off with Whalen.
