Chapter 10

Nick was grateful when Jay chose something simple. He took the potatoes he’d brought for the latkes Austin loved, and shredded them to fry up for hash browns to go with the Porterhouses. The baby carrots he’d brought to coat in the citrus honey glaze he’d made at home got steamed with the broccoli he had to make cream of broccoli soup on Sunday afternoon. At least he didn’t have to worry about dessert. Austin never ate dessert. The ice cream was Nick’s indulgence.

Jay devoured every bite. In fact, Nick didn’t know if he’d ever seen anybody eat his food as enthusiastically as Jay did. He even asked for seconds. Austin never did that.

“Why are you always trying to fatten me up?” Austin always complained. “I don’t have your metabolism. Some of us actually have to pay attention to what goes into our mouths.”

When Jay offered to clean up, Nick refused to let him do it on his own. He didn’t want to be stuck on the couch, stewing in his memories.
