“Why don’t you shut the doors and get comfortable?” he said. “It’s better if we don’t have any interruptions.”

The room felt cozier when the doors clicked shut behind him. He was in complete agreement. He also had the distinct feeling that Martin had shared his theory about Alec with Will, and that Will thought it was stupid as he did. Shutting them out might divide the family, but in that moment, the choice to side with Will and Alec was the easiest one he’d made in a very long time.

It took a while for Alec to relax enough to do any of the small tricks his father was trying to teach him. When Rowan came in from breakfast, he looked like he wanted to pound someone’s face in, his broad shoulders tense, his mouth grim. He hadn’t been happy nobody liked his idea about the doctor, but he’d had his way in the end, so Alec didn’t see what was the matter now.
