Chapter 54

Lights flashed across his father’s face as a car pulled up behind them. He glanced past Alec, then slid back into the driver’s seat. “We can’t leave the truck here.” He eased away from the curb and aimed at the visitor parking lot nearby. Once they were away from the hospital, the interior cloaked in darkness again, he said, “You have your mother’s eyes. I’d call dirty pool, but it’s not your fault that’s my Achilles’ heel.”

His eyes pricked with tears from how forcefully the relief surged through him. He sat back before Will noticed and stared out the window until he could be sure he wasn’t going to cry. “I’ll remember that next time I need something.” Though he deliberately fought to keep his tone light, he failed.

“I have conditions.”

“Maybe I do, too.”

“I’m serious, Alec. I need you to do whatever I tell you until this is over.”
