It was the same chemical smell he’d picked up in the tree. It was faint, but the more he concentrated, the stronger it got.

His head swiveled.

And it was coming from behind Alec’s closed door.

His nerves surged. Had Alec climbed the tree last night and not said anything? Scent markers could’ve transferred to his clothes, which would explain why it was in his room. But his father’s voice suddenly filled his head, when he’d made his suspicions about Alec perfectly clear. At one point, both he and Martin thought he could’ve had malicious intents. Alec knew it, too. They only abandoned those theories once Alec was miles away when an attack was made.

Alec couldn’t have orchestrated it specifically to gain their trust again, could he?
