His first thought on the latter went straight back to the hospital, but that wasn’t right. It wasn’t antiseptic. It wasn’t medicinal, either, so that wasn’t the trigger. Nosing around the branches, Rowan found the spot where the smells were strongest and rested his face against the bark to breathe them in as closely as possible without outside interference

The best approximation was chemical. He couldn’t put his finger on what, though. Worse, he couldn’t shake the niggle that he should, or at the very least, determine why it seemed so familiar.

Without any other clues to offer the others, he leaped to the ground and made his way back to the house. His coat was dirty from contact with the trees, and the cold was beginning to settle in his bones. He would give himself a good tongue bath and curl up on his pillow for a while to warm up. Maybe if he wasn’t thinking about it so hard, he’d figure out what exactly the smell was.
