“The power of positive thinking. Can you smell or hear anything weird?”

He’d been so focused on worrying about Alec, he hadn’t paid close attention to their surroundings. He shifted that now, tilting his head up a fraction to sniff carefully at the air, silencing his steps to make it easier to hear other noises. It wasn’t easy. The neighborhood was quiet, but there was a lot more ambient noise than he was used to back in Montana. The distant roar of traffic, the surge of aircraft above their heads, more than one TV set playing in other homes.

Scents were easier to parse, but those were many as well. The street was well-traveled, and the effects of the airport drifted along the slight breeze.
